With Muay Thai having it’s roots in hand-to-hand combat on the battlefield, it’s no surprise to hear that boxing gloves weren’t originally a part of Muay Thai fights. Muay Thai fighters, known as Nak Muay, would use a form of hand binding using hemp rope to protect the hands and wrist. This traditional form of rope-binding (known as Kaad Chuek) provided support similar to a boxing hand wrap, while inflicting considerably more damage, especially when fighters would create knots near their knuckles, to inflict additional damage to their opponents.
Can you imagine the rope burns you’d experience from that? Ouch!
